A European university alliance for education, research and innovation

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in CIVIS Europe’s Civic University Alliance 2019-2026 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is a founding member of CIVIS – Europe’s Civic University Alliance, one of the first European University Alliances established in 2019 under the European Universities Initiative of the European Commission.

Today, CIVIS brings together 11 leading European universities and works in close partnership with 6 African universities, creating a vibrant international academic community.

Scientific Director of CIVIS on behalf of NKUA is Professor Sophia Papaioannou, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations and Extroversion. Through CIVIS, NKUA offers students, academics and staff opportunities to:

  • participate in joint European degree programmes and micro-programmes, micro-credentials, covering a broad range of academic disciplines, with a strong focus on addressing contemporary societal challenges, including climate change, health, democracy and cultural heritage, the digital transition, and sustainable development
  • benefit from short and long-term study programs with mobility opportunities (BIPs, long term mobility)
  • engage in collaborative research networks and expand their international partnerships
  • take part in innovative educational initiatives
  • contribute to society through the CIVIS Open Labs, foster universities’ partnerships with stakeholders
  • participate in staff training & job shadowing activities (CIVIS staff weeks).
