Alumni and Friends Association

The University of Athens Alumni and Friends Association strengthens ties among alumni and between alumni and the University by promoting shared interests, encouraging engagement among its members, and recognising their contributions.

THE ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

The Alumni and Friends Association of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a non-profit organisation established to advance educational, academic, social and cultural purposes.

The Association aims to:

  • promote the educational, academic, social and cultural interests shared by its members.
  • encourage networking among members and strengthen links with distinguished individuals from academia, the professions and public life.
  • keep members informed about developments, activities and opportunities at the University.
  • strengthen ties between alumni, the University community and other alumni associations and higher education institutions in Greece and internationally.
  • foster lifelong relationships among alumni and between alumni and the University, contributing to its continued development and enhancing its national and international standing.
  • provide financial assistance, mentoring and other forms of support to current and prospective students of the University.
  • support the University through donations, financial contributions and voluntary assistance for educational, research and other academic initiatives.
  • recognise outstanding alumni by conferring honorary distinctions in acknowledgement of their achievements and contributions to society, science and culture.

 

The Association has two categories of membership: Ordinary Members and Honorary Members.

Ordinary membership is open to applicants from Greece and abroad who are:

  • graduates of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens holding a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree.
  • recipients of honorary degrees or honorary doctorates conferred by the University, including Doctors Honoris Causa of its Schools and Departments.
  • students who have attended the University through exchange programmes, including Erasmus.
  • current or former members of the University’s academic staff (including faculty members, laboratory teaching staff and special technical laboratory staff), visiting professors, and current or former members of the University’s administrative staff.

 

Applications for membership should be submitted to the Association’s Board of Directors, either in person, by post or by email, together with evidence of eligibility and payment of the annual membership fee.

The Board of Directors may elect as Honorary Members individuals from Greece or abroad who have rendered exceptional service to Greek society, the international community, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, another higher education institution in Greece or overseas, or to the Association itself, irrespective of whether they are graduates of the University of Athens. Honorary Members are exempt from payment of the annual membership fee. They are not entitled to vote at meetings of the General Assembly, nor may they vote or stand for election to the Association’s governing body.
